Here at the Double Dollar we take
the roping horse program very serious. As the years
go by, we will have the luxury of having more of our
own colts out of our great studs and mares-but for now
we buy young horses off several ranches in Idaho, Montana,
Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska and Colorado. We only start
with the cream of the
crop. We look for athletics, size and conformation--if
we can get them with chrome, that's all the better.
Most important to us is their mind. If, through our
training techniques, they prove they are not good-minded,
their days are numbered here.
Before we enter horses into the roping program, we
pride ourselves in having them extremely broke in every
way. We cut on most all of the rope horses for 60 to
90 days. We get them to flex and bend, move off our
leg pressure, break at the pole and be totally behind
the bridle before we graduate them to the next level.
When they are ready, we then track a lead steer until
their confidence and our confidence are conclusive they
are ready for the arena.
Throughout the duration of the training, all rope horses
will work in the feedlot, ranch, and high mountain country
fulfilling such duties as moving, sorting, gathering,
doctoring and branding cattle. These horses definitely
get used and put in all kinds of situations.
